7 25TH ANNUAL CRIME PREVENTION GUIDE MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR OF CHARLOTTETOWN On behalf of the City of Charlottetown, I wish to congratulate the Prince Edward Island Police Association on the publication of the 25th Annual Crime Prevention Guide. The theme for this year’s is Family Violence; a topic of concern for all residents of Prince Edward Island. Family Violence can affect anyone and takes many forms. There are thousands of victims of Family Violence in Canada each year and they represent more than 25% of all violent crimes reported to our police services. In 2001 as Mayor of Charlottetown, I created the Mayors Purple Ribbon Task Force to help end Family Violence in our community. We have done great work in our community through this Task Force and the City of Charlottetown has been recognized for its exemplary work in the area of violence prevention in 2002 when it received the Equality Recognized Award, coordinated by the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women, and in 2001 when it received the Women in International Cities Crime Safety Award. We will continue our work and if anyone would like information on any of our initiatives please check out our website at www.charlottetown.ca or give us a call. The City recognizes the great work of our police services who dedicate themselves each and every day in providing a safe community for our residents. This guide is another way to get the message out to our citizens of the great work that you do for your community and to ensure a great quality of life for all residents. In closing, I wish all members of the Prince Edward Island Police Association all the best during the coming year and thank you for your great service to the communities in which you live, work and play.
